Taking Proper Care of Your Lawn: Can You Water Your Seeds Too Much?

Watering your seeds is one of the most important things you need to do when you just seeded your new lawn. While the process requires care through other avenues as well, using the right amount of water is probably the most essential aspect when it comes to facilitating proper growth and making sure that your grass seeds remain alive and healthy.  Even if you are planting a drought tolerant grass you still need to water the seed really good to initiate growth.

Contrary to what some people might believe, it is very possible to water your seeds too much. If you use too much water, it can actually kill them or at least make their growth extremely difficult. Grass seeds are uncommonly vulnerable during their first few weeks of growth, so you have to pay special attention during this time. Also, since they don’t yet use too much water – and especially when the soil has a clay-like quality to it that makes it retain more water than normal – a lot of water could end up unnecessarily trapped inside the soil, impairing the growth of your new lawn.

The issue can, of course, be remedied quite easily: just cut down on the volume of water. In most cases, you will only need to apply about an inch of water 1-2 times per week, although it’s good practice to also check on the precipitation and humidity in your area, and adjust your watering activities accordingly.
