Organic Herbs: Growing and Using Them in Your Garden
There are many plants that influence each other. Some have helpful influence and are referred to as companion plants, while others can be harmful and are referred to as non-companion plants. In organic gardening, a suitable group of plants is essential if you want to enjoy healthy vegetables without using chemical solutions to remove pests and diseases.
The smells that some plants exude are very effective in removing pests that attack other plants, so they are real protective barriers. These plants are more attractive to pests, and divert the attack from the plants that we want to protect. They are used in organic gardening as trap plants or sacrificial plants.
Organic herbs that you should grow in your garden include:
Sage (salvia officinalis) – In organic gardening, it is used for repelling species of butterflies, beetles, flies and snails that attack other plants and vegetables. In the flowering period, sage attracts bees and butterflies, thereby stimulating the pollination process.
Basil – It repels mosquitoes and flies, and, in the flowering period it attracts multicolored butterflies to the garden. It is a good companion for tomatoes, peppers, beans, cabbage, beets, parsley, asparagus. Organic basil varieties recommended for an organic garden are Red Ruben and Lemon.
Lavender – Because of its strong smell, it drives away pests, but attracts a number of beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies that pollinate plants. Using an organic fertilizer can be helpful for your plants to flourish.
