Do It Yourself Lawn Care Fertilization

What does fertilization actually mean? Nothing else but increasing soil fertility so the grass grows and develops optimally; in general, the process consists in the use of fertilizers and irrigation. Lawn needs at least 16 essential elements for healthy growth, but rarely the soil is sufficiently fertile to provide all of them. How To Fertilize Drought Tolerant Grass

The most important elements are nitrogen (N), potassium (K) and phosphorus (P). Do not start te fertilization before making a soil test to find out exactly what nutrients are missing.

Regarding the fertilization period, this is done depending on the types of grass and their growth periods.

- Winter grass needs light fertilization at the beginning of autumn, enough to develop its roots. Then mid-spring fertilization ensures the growth and density of the blades. Avoid fertilizing the lawn during the summer and do not use a quick-action fertilizer either at the end of spring. The most effective one is the autumn fertilization which helps with drought tolerant grass, because this is the time of the year when the lawn will stores more carbon hydrates and will help it resist better in the cold season, hibernating safely until spring.

-  Summer grass has its growth period between late spring and early summer. An application of spring fertilizer (right after the last frost) will help it grow better.

After each application of fertilizer, it is necessary to soak the lawn, so that the fertilizer can dissolve and be absorbed.
