Why Clay Soil Needs to Be Properly Broken Up and Treated

The problem of clay soil is a very serious one when you’re trying to plant a garden or to replant your lawn. You could find the soil to be like clay when you purchase a new property, or you might find that it turns more clay-like over time. Whichever the case, at some point you will have to deal with the matter head-on since otherwise you won’t be able to plant your lawn and flowers.

Clay soil needs to be broken up primarily because it retains a lot of water. Even though some clay soils might be more efficient at providing nutrients than others, they might be affected quite easily by rain or excessive watering, so that the water will remain in the soil much longer than intended and effectively drown the root or seed so it can no longer grow properly.

When you break down clay soil by applying a good soil treatment, it will still retain some water, but the fact that it’s broken up will allow more  crevices for the water to flow through. Also, if you combine it with richer and sandier soil which presents greater water permeability, you can essentially adjust your soil to maximize the amount of nutrient and water that reaches your plants without actually drowning them or affecting them negatively in any way.
