Does Drought Tolerant Grass Survive in a Humid Environment?

Buying drought tolerant grass for dealing with a more humid environment doesn’t normally make a lot of sense. However, if you seeded the wrong grass or if the local environment is one that tends to shift from humid to dry on occasion, then it’s important to make the most out of the grass you have.

Drought tolerant grass normally feels great in a dry environment. Its ability to retain water allows it to resist a greater range of temperatures without needing more than about 1-1.25 inches of water per week. Despite its robustness, however, drought tolerant grass will naturally find it more difficult to survive in areas where humidity levels are greater. Especially in warmer weather, overwatering is highly discouraged, since it can cause runoff problems or the growth of various fungi and lawn diseases that your drought tolerant grass will not be able to withstand too well due to the added humidity.

If the stressors are not too bad, then chances are that your drought tolerant grass might survive somewhat longer, but not without problems. In most cases, even if the conditions are slightly favorable, after a while you might find that you will be better off seeding your lawn again using the appropriate grass for your local climate.
